The old saying is, “A picture is worth a thousand words.” Increasingly, though, a picture is worth only one word … and that word is “no.”
The word is “no” because your LinkedIn profile photo is a mess, so the hiring manager skips right past you to the next candidate.
Please don’t use a photo with you in sunglasses and/or a baseball cap, or with another person (even if it’s your favorite NFL player), or one from a social event where you cropped someone else out but we can still see part of their body. Or a selfie, for heaven’s sake.
It should go without saying, but we see all of these over and over again.
You don’t need to hire a professional photographer, but get a friend to take a well-lit head shot of you looking professional, with a nice, uncluttered background. We really would like to be able to recognize you when you walk in for the big interview.
And by the way … no photo at all? That’s just as bad.
